Did you know that approximately 40% of Americans create #NewYearsResolutions? According to Statistic Brain, less than 10% of them were successful last year alone, leaving a whopping 130 million Americans with unfulfilled goals.
Why do so many people struggle with follow through and what can we do to increase our chances of success?
Goals create tension within us. When we create a goal, we are stating that there is a gap between where we are and where we want to end up. It is only when we reach our goal and that gap is filled that the tension is released.
What is this tension all about? For one, we are faced with the prospect of change and that often leads to #fear. Yes, we can both want something new or different for our lives and at the same time be afraid of what it will mean or of the work it will take to bring this goal to fruition. We might be faced with a number of fears including a fear of failure, of success, or of embarrassment if things don't work out.
Fear blocks our #RootChakra (an energy point at the base of the spine associated with your sense of safety and security) which makes it that much harder for us to do what we need to do to attain our goals. The solution? Consider working on overcoming your fears first.
It can also work in the reverse. If you know you're filled with fear, but are not sure what your goals might be, you're not alone. This is a great invitation to focus on clearing your fear so you can feel more #grounded and be able to make clear decisions about next steps.
Ask yourself: "What is this fear stopping me from doing or having?" This question allows you to identify your goal. Once identified, put the goal on the shelf and focus on eliminating the fear.
